Dear Congress participants,

We have reached the end of the Second Virtual Congress of General Practice and Family Medicine, a unique web event that joined more than 1200 doctors and other healthcare professionals from 75 different countries.

In the last 3 months more than 150 scientific presentations were presented online, focusing a wide range of areas in medical knowledge, such as eHealth, patient empowerment, peer-to-peer communication, disease prevention and treatment.

It is with great honor that we announce the closing ceremony, that is available here. The kind words of Fernando Santos, chairman of the Second Virtual Congress, and the closing lecture "Consumers and Science Behind Healthcare" by Janet Wale, convenor of The Cochrane Consumer Network, surely bring a unique ending to this event.

During the following days, the scientific committee will announce the winners of the best e-oral presentation and best e-poster presentation.

My best wishes, and a joyous holiday season.

Ok, this one is specially dedicated to the GP's who are all Social and Professional Networking buffs.

If there is one event (apart from the Virtual Congress of course!) you shouldn't miss (unless you're sick, broke or can come up with a more than valid reason), you shouldn't miss, this is it.

Medicine 2.0'09 - International Conference on Social Networking and Web 2.0 in Medicine and Health
Location: MaRS Centre, 101 College Street, Toronto, ON, M5G 1L7, Canada
September 17 - September 18,  2009

The mind behind this all is Canada's import from Germany, Dr Gunter Eysenbach, who has set up an event which is proving to gather the world's leading minds of Web 2.0 in medicine and setting the latest cutting-edge trends. Do I need to say anything else?

For some of you, this might seem like more of the same.

For others, it might probably be a life-saver.

Let's face it, IT is nowadays practically an extension of our physical life, but not everyone navigates through it with the same degree of proficiency.

Whether you are just starting out and just want to learn how to use the internet and email, or are an advanced user and want to delve into web design and programming, this is also the site for you. We won't give you that evil look if you decide to create a virtual congress, because there is also material here to get you learning the ropes about online medical communities.

North America may still be the planet's prime technological haven, but  Europe seems not to have fallen asleep, and to actually to have the edge right now as far as Information Technologies (IT) in Primary Health care are concerned.

The BMJ has given coverage this week to a recently published study in the journal "Health Policy", which compared the use of IT among Family Physicians in 7 leading developed countries.  The use of Electronic Health Records (EHR) in the USA or Canada is still lagging far behind among its peers in Europe and Oceania, findings which become more credible if we consider that doctors who reported using EHR were more likely to be providing better quality care, which is ultimately what matters.

This initiative is worth praising. India is proving to be force to reckon with in terms of e-health empowerment. With such a frank shortage of primary care physicians in rural and remote areas, First Care Health seems to be a breath of fresh air. This initiative consists on an e-leaning platform that is expecting to train community health workers in order to provide primary health care to underserved populations. What else will India have in store?

The Organizing Committee reminds all the congress participants that the Second Virtual Congress of GP/FM only accepts abstracts and finalworks written in english.

We consider that due to the significant participation of colleagues from different countries (at the moment from 50 different countries), it is of great importance that all the presented works can be read and therefore understood.
