2nd Virtual Congress of General Practice and Family Medicine

Newsletter No. 2 - November 2008

   Dear Colleagues,

It became clear that, following on from the First Virtual Congress of General Practice/Family Medicine in June this year, organizing its sequel has become an imperative. This stems right from the outset, firstly, because of the enthusiam shared by all those involved in the organization of this event. Furthermore, it is also due to the impression that we had concerning the potential of a platform of this kind to unleash a world where the sharing of knowledge and wisdom is a requirement, and where the speed of the information flow is unsurmountable.
A Virtual Congress is likely to be the best way to make an overview under a major showcase of experiences and knowledge, by the simplicity of the participation processes it allows, which ensures a smoother, easier and more comprehensive accessibility.
When we chose “Empowerment” as the general theme of the Congress, we thought that today it is absolutely unquestionable to build up a new health paradigm that promotes the awareness of the citizens regarding their own healthcare, and that places them at the heart of the health systems and en route to a practice that stands on an increasingly shared responsibilty. That progressive and liberating notion leads to a sort of medicine that requires a mindful observance towards scientific and technical evidence based on the confrontation and analysis of global knowledge and wisdom, but also to the involvement of the citizens-patients themselves in the establishment of health objectives as well as their own therapeutic and appraisal processes in its technical, social and economical vectors. Issues such as access to health information, the doctor-patient relationship, the electronic health record data and its globalization, the medical risk and a safety culture, among others, are nowadays emerging themes calling for clarification and development.
That ambition depends enormously, however, from the existing information and of the effectiveness of its dissemination and types of communication whereby the new technologies are increasingly standing out in an irreversible and unsurmountable way.
This Second Virtual Congress fits in such a context, and fosters in a compreensive and participative way, the presentation of themes, from biology to ethics, and from learning to practice, that contribute towards the promotion of an operational knowledge.
We hope to attract enough people from all over the world to participate in the Second Virtual Congress of General Practice/Family Medicine, and contribute with great quality presentations regarding the proposed themes. I am sure that in the end we will all come out better prepared.

   Very best wishes,

   Dear Colleagues,

The Virtual Congress of general practice/family medicine is the citadel for general practitioners/family physicians throughout the world to share their knowledge, to gain further additional knowledge and to make new friends.
Doctors can participate in the congress without having to leave their home or country. The only passport required is the free registration, and its visas are your username and password.
Doctors can browse through abstracts and presentations at their own pace in the form of e-oral communications e-learning, and e-posters.
The discussion forum is a vital part of the congress whereby doctors can discuss and exchange their views.
The first Virtual Congress was a great success. More than 1600 doctors from 65 countries participated in the congress. The Second Virtual Congress will kick off on the 21st September 2009 and end on the 20th December of the same year. The general theme of the congress is e-health: empowering towards operational knowledge.
The advances in information technology have brought great changes. There is a revolutionary change in the dissemination of medical knowledge. Nowadays, we have teleconferences, videoconferences and virtual meetings. Family physicians can now upgrade their knowledge through a mere mouse click, regardless of where they are based on this planet.
E-health is the result of advancements in information technology. The integration of internet in the healthcare sector will become commonplace by the end of the decade, thus benefitting health professionals, patients, and the general public all over the world.
E-health provides simple, easy access to health information, support services and goods. It can link up previously distinct services and information. It could allow citizens to form their own health organisations. It may help deal with staff shortages or requests from staff for better working conditions.
E-health could lead the change towards services that are better coordinated, towards better information and choice for patients, carers and others, and towards better communication of patient information to and between primary care teams. This could possibly cut down the number of phone calls, appointments and help improve the compliance to treatment.
E-health offers many opportunities for prevention, choice, home based care and chronic disease management, and it will widen access to healthcare for most patients. All these aspects will be highlighted in the conference.

I welcome all the General Practitioners/Family Physicians/Doctors from all specialities, to register and participate in the Second Virtual Congress of GP/FM.
